WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost in specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an Item Level Upgrade by +3. A random extra substat is also increased with each upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and can be visited anytime to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current item level of the gear being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For instance, upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players from item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased, it can be used on any weapon or tool with the help of button, which will show a preview of the item at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item upgrades and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrade upgrader at start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead, the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require various methods which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, several new features were added to the upgrade system. After the player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This applies even if those items come from an entirely different set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players have reached certain achievement milestones.

Crests

Another significant change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to use them wisely. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the Best item upgrade gear that you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill several slots. The account-wide discount is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
