How to Replace an audi q5 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor replacement audi keys (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.
